Ladakh - General Information?
|
|
|
|
Lo the intrepid and
pugnacious, Ladakj promises a quixotic diversion.
Sometimes called LITTLE TIBET. It is situated to the
North-East of the Great Himalayan divide, its sparse
inhabitants forming part of the Tibetan racial stock.
Situated at the apex of triangular plateau formed by the
Indus, at an altitude of 11,500 ft above sea level is
Leh, its capital – the biggest oasis of the mountain
region and heart of Ladakh. Its forbidding terrain of
stark arid brown granite mountains runs across the
landscape changing to various hues of purple as the sun
sets across a Prussian blue horizon.
The Himalayas exercise dominating influence upon
meteorological conditions, Leh has a climate
characterized by almost total lack of rainfall, extreme
dryness and intense isolation [exposure to sun’s rays]
and great diurnal and annual range of temperatures with
a low of -30 degree Centigrade in winter. Life depends
on melt water from surrounding mountains.
There are many accessible modes of reaching this austere
yet exhilarating land, remote in space and time.
The 235-mile Srinagar – Leh road is the longest,
passing over the 17,730 ft high Khardung- La, the first
of the high passes on the historic caravan trail to
Central Asia from India.
Or you could have an excellent visual introduction to
Ladakh by trekking. Or fly. This offers a view of the
mightiest mountain ranges in the world including the Pir
Panjal, the Karakoram Mountains, the Great Himalaya
Range, the Zanskar Range and the Ladakh Range.
It is not usual to come across yaks that have been
domesticated and used as beasts of burden.
Other forms of transport may suffice however, Taxis, the
fastest and by far the most efficient, will take you on
any excursion. There are not many places in Leh that
cannot be reached by foot. The mosque, city palace and
monasteries are within walking distance.
The palace, though in ruins, bears a striking
resemblance to the Potala in Lhasa. The Namgyal Tsemo
[Peak of Victory] serves as a backdrop for religious
ceremonies. A temple dedicated to Maityeya- the future
Buddha, and the Gongkhang Temple of Guardian Divinities
are important landmarks in Leh.
Yak and Yeti Travels welcomes you to this moon lit land
where outdoor activities is best experienced when it is
monsoon elsewhere in India.
Adventure: Hiking/Trekking is best done in summer
– in July, when mountain flowers are abundant and
fields green, August, when hues turn to yellow and
September, the start of harvest with the valley
gradually changing to yellow ochre. Itineraries for
mountaineering and trekking are numerous. |
