Sundarban - General Information

 
  Once the capital of undivided India and situated on the banks of river Hooghly, Calcutta links eastern India to the rest of country. Cited as the Mecca of the East, this megacity is known for its museum, festivals, culture, art, music, sports, food and specially its warm hearted people. A city that is intensely alive to cultural, artistic and intellectual persuits offers you such intense distinctive memories that seem to grow on you.

At Sunderbans you can expect the thrills of a lifetime. Wild cruising through the brackish kharris flanked by dense mangrove forest all around in the luxury launch M.V. Chitrarekha and M.V. Madhukar, experience the two day river cruise with one night on board with your family and friends.

Permission for river cruise: A general river cruise requires no approval. But to visit places outside the core area permission should be taken from the authorities.

Rediscover the natural treasures: Ever thought of spending a whole day in the midst of mudclad crocodiles, hopping chital and majestic royal bengals! If not, then come to Sunderbans.

A world heritage site (awarded by UNESCO in 1997) that evokes the feeling of an animals lover in you. Where after a close encounter with the wild you can spend the adventurous in launch under the shooting stars.

Situated on the lower end of the gangetic West Bengal 22.00o N – 89.00o E, is this world’s largest delta covered buy mangrove forest and vast saline mud flats. A land of 54 tiny island, crisscrossed by innumerable tributarities of Ganga, that was once infested by Arakanese and Portuguese pirates is now the abode of varied flora and fauna population. An area of 9630 Sq. km, where 70% is under saline water makes the life of commoners; mostly honey catchers, prawn catchers and fishermen, very difficult. This is Sunderbans, the world largest estuarine forest.

The undiscovered Greenery: Sunderbans, the place that owes its name to Sundari trees, consist of flora population like Genwa, Dhundal, Passur, Garjan and Kankra. Apart from this trees, impenetrable Goran trees between 1.8 metres and 3.6 metres high covers almost the entire region one of the most remarkable feature of this place is the bayonet like roots of mangrove forest that stick out above the water level.

Nature apart, if you want to feel essence of spirituality then this is the place to be. A place of Maa Bonobibi (the Goddess of the forest) to Shiber Kumir (Lord Shiva’s crocodile) or from Dakshinaroy (an ogre, the ancestor of all tigers) to Kapil Muni (an incarnation of Lord Vishnu).

Best time to visit: September to March. Specially in winter to catch a view of migratory birds.
